Monte Saraceno: highest peak on the island of Vulcano at 482 m

At a height of 481 m on Monte Saraceno, there is a gigantic panoramic view of the younger Fossa (391 m), surrounded by the old volcanic base of the island of Vulcano, as well as the island of Lipari and, in clear weather, as far as Salina. Most hikers (99%) climb the Fossa to see the fumaroles and look down on the crater. Alternatively, you can simply look at the fumaroles at the harbor and then admire the overall scenery on Monte Saraceno. (The fumaroles of the Fossa cannot be seen from the summit.)

After about 45 minutes on foot from Pignataro port you reach the summit of Monte Rosa (why Monte Mazzuni?). The church up there (Chiesa dell'Esaltazione della Santa Croce) is no longer well preserved, the vegetation around it has now taken over. But the view is worth the trip.
