An impressive bridge and a suitable starting point for hiking through the Aradena Gorge to Marmara Beach. The descent through the old village of Aradena, west of the bar, provides access to the gorge. Trail markers on the gorge's rocks guide the way to Marmara Beach to the south. The wooden railing is partially rotten, so trusting the steel chains anchored in the rock and using your own leg muscles is advisable. Sturdy footwear is recommended; climbing equipment is not necessary. Falling rocks are possible. A taverna on the beach offers refreshments. Continuing from Marmara Beach lies Loutro, which can be reached via a pleasant rocky walk. A rocky ascent towards Anopolis completes the hike back to the Aradena Bridge.

The journey there is worthwhile, always along the E4.....

The gorge is lined by vertical rock walls up to 600 m high, which allow a passage of only three to four meters at the narrowest point of the gorge, at the so-called "iron gate".

August 2024. I don't know why the trail is described as difficult. It took us 5 hours to complete it from the entrance to the beach lounger at a normal walking pace. My sports band described the workout as very easy - 95% of the time my heart rate did not exceed 120bpm. So what difficulty are we talking about? Unless you can't walk downhill for 5 hours... The route is easy. No big gradients or technical difficulties. The route on AllTrials is incorrect - it indicates 700m of elevation gain, which is nonsense, because there are no significant climbs there, as the diagram suggests in red. This is misleading and should be corrected. The most interesting part of the trip starts around 10 km when we actually reach the bottom of the gorge and giant rock walls surround us. That's why many people choose to explore this part of the gorge by going "against the flow". I strongly advise against arriving late. Starting before 8 gives you a chance for a parking space, shade for 90% of the route and a pleasant temperature. Additionally, the trail was practically empty. We overtook maybe 30 people in total. The last 2-3 km were already in the sun but not as hot as in the afternoon. People who arrived at the beach after 14:00 looked like they were dying of exhaustion from the heat ;), while we were cooling down under the sunbeds (10 euros for 2 sunbeds and 2 drinks - a very nice change after sunbeds for 40 euros on Vai beach...) and enjoying the very pleasant sea and ultra hot dark sand on the beach. At 17:30 the ferries will take you to the chosen port, where buses are already waiting. Just don't confuse the ferry or the bus ;) Take comfortable shoes for a long walk through the forest and stones - this is the only condition for a successful route. There are water and toilets on the trail every few km. 1.5 l of water that I had with me was enough for me. To sum up - anyone who is able to cover a distance of 17km is able to cross the Samaria Gorge, as it does not pose any effort or technical problem.

The region, dominated by the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), offers a diverse range of challenges. You'll find extensive limestone formations, numerous peaks exceeding 2,000 meters, and deep gorges. This includes both moderate and difficult routes, with 7 challenging options available on komoot, such as the ascent to Gigilos Summit or the demanding trek through the Samaria Gorge.
Yes, while many routes are challenging, there are also moderate options. Komoot lists 5 moderate mountaineering routes in the area. For example, you could explore the Canyon des Trolls loop from Moundros, which offers a less strenuous experience while still immersing you in the natural beauty of the region.
The White Mountains themselves are a major highlight, with their distinctive white limestone. You'll encounter dramatic gorges like the Samaria Gorge, famous for its towering cliffs and the narrow 'Iron Gates'. Other notable features include the Stone Arch in Imbros Gorge and the Ruins of Samaria Village within the Samaria Gorge.
The region is versatile. While popular for hiking in warmer months, the White Mountains also offer unique 'off-season' opportunities. Spring and autumn generally provide pleasant temperatures for trekking. Winter brings snow to the peaks, making it suitable for ski mountaineering, but requires specific gear and experience.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. A challenging example is the Pachnes Summit Cross loop from Gonia, which takes you to the highest peak in the Lefka Ori. For a different experience, consider the Bridge Over Samaria Gorge loop from Anopoli.
The region offers several options for staying close to the trails. The Kallergi Hut is a well-known mountain refuge in the Lefka Ori massif, providing a starting point for many climbs. Other options include the Milia Mountain Retreat & Restaurant or the Alonia Guesthouse, which can serve as bases for your adventures.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars from over 27 reviews. More than 120 mountaineers have used komoot to explore the varied terrain, often praising the dramatic landscapes, challenging ascents, and the unique experience of traversing the White Mountains and its gorges.
The extensive trail network, including sections of the European E4 trail, allows for multi-day treks. While specific multi-day routes are not listed here, the presence of mountain refuges like the Kallergi Hut facilitates longer expeditions into the rugged terrain of the Lefka Ori, offering deep immersion into the Cretan countryside.
While specific public transport routes to every trailhead are not detailed, the Omalos Plateau often serves as a common starting point for treks like the Samaria Gorge, and it is generally accessible by local buses from Chania during peak season. For more remote trailheads, private transport or taxis might be necessary.
Yes, the Samaria Gorge is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and typically requires an entrance fee to help maintain the national park. It's advisable to check the official park regulations and permit requirements before planning your visit, especially during peak season, as access can be restricted or require booking.
Yes, some routes have tavernas or guesthouses nearby. For instance, the Taverna Porofargo is listed as a nearby highlight. Additionally, villages and plateaus like Omalos, which serve as starting points for many treks, often have local eateries where you can refuel after your mountaineering adventure.
The highest peak in the Lefka Ori, and thus in the Chania region, is Pachnes, standing at 2,453 meters. Reaching its summit offers breathtaking panoramic views. A challenging route to this peak is the Πάχνες – Διάβαση Ρουσιές loop from End of Pachnes Track.
