July 18, 2025, Probstmühle Oberdorla

The Probstmühle (Provost's Mill) in Oberdorla is one of the seven mills that once stood, or still stand, on the Siebenmühlenbach stream. The name Probstmühle (Provost's Mill) or Herrenmühle (Herren's Mill) probably dates back to the 11th century, the year it was built. At that time, the mill belonged to the church foundation and was thus subordinate to the parish priest (Provost). Like most mills, the mill is a grain mill. Here, the grain brought by farmers was ground into flour, semolina, and rye flour. https://www.gemeinde-vogtei.de/verzeichnis/visitenkarte.php?mandat=193740

A grassy path with beautiful views of the lake leads along the Sacrificial Moor. With a little luck, you can spot swans, great crested grebes, coots, and, along the shoreline, numerous dragonflies.

Since 1947, peat has been mined in the Rieth between Oberdorla and Niederdorla. Animal bones and shards have been found time and again. However, when a bison skull, a wooden bowl and parts of a wooden idol were discovered in 1957, the staff of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History in Weimar were informed. It soon became clear that these were not the remains of a settlement, but an ancient cult site.

The market mill in Oberdorla takes its name from the former market street, today's Bahnhofstrasse. The first mention of the market mill was in the interest register in 1512. Until 1995, descendants of the last master miller, Hartwig Schütz, milled grain for local farmers as a side job. Today the mill is a brewery inn that is popular with visitors.

The Probstmühle in Oberdorla is one of the seven mills that once stood or still stand on the Siebenmühlenbach. The name Probstmühle or Herrenmühle probably comes from the 11th century, when it was built. At that time, the mill belonged to the church foundation and was thus subordinate to the church lord (Probst). Like most mills, the mill is a grain mill. Here, the grain brought by the farmers was ground into flour, semolina and Schroth. Today, the Probstmühle is no longer in operation. It was bought by the former municipality of Oberdorla in 2006 and extensively restored so that it could still grind grain today. The mill now serves as a technical monument and is used for weddings.
